The YouTube Description Guide: 5,000 Characters, Used Properly

By Prakash Gohel · Updated 2026-09-03 · Sources are linked inline.

YouTube allows 5,000 characters in a video description (YouTube Help: Edit video settings). Google's own guidance on descriptions confirms the same figure and recommends writing for people rather than stuffing keywords (YouTube Help: Tips for video descriptions).

Almost nobody reads 5,000 characters. That does not make the space worthless — it makes the ordering critical.

The three zones of a description

Zone 1: above the fold (roughly the first 150 characters)

This is the only part most viewers ever see, because it sits above the "…more" cutoff and it is what gets pulled into search previews. It should do exactly two jobs: restate what the video delivers, and give a reason to keep watching. No links, no timestamps, no boilerplate, no "Welcome back to my channel".

Zone 2: the useful middle

Everything a motivated viewer might want: chapter timestamps, links to things you mentioned, gear you used, the resource you promised on camera, a short summary of the method. This is the zone that reduces "where is the link" comments, which is a measurable return on ten minutes of writing.

Timestamps are the highest-value item here. A description whose first timestamp is 0:00 and which lists at least three chapters in ascending order gives you clickable chapters on the progress bar, which helps viewers who want one specific section stay instead of leaving.

Zone 3: the boilerplate tail

Subscribe prompt, social links, affiliate disclosure, hashtags. It is fine that nobody reads this. It is not fine to move it to the top.

Hashtags: the numbers that matter

YouTube will display up to three hashtags from your description above the video title, choosing the ones it considers most relevant. And there is a hard ceiling: if a video carries more than 60 hashtags, YouTube ignores every hashtag on it (YouTube Help: Find playlists & videos using hashtags).

Sixty is a ceiling, not a target. Three to five specific, genuinely relevant tags outperform a wall of generic ones, because the generic tags put you in feeds full of enormous channels where you are invisible. The Hashtag Generator gives you a starting set; the tags that do real work are the specific ones only you can add — your niche, your city, your series name.

What not to do

Tools that help

The YouTube Description Generator produces a structured starter description in this shape — hook, body, call to action — so you are editing a draft rather than facing an empty box. Check the length with the Word Counter before you paste, and use the Case Converter to fix any section that arrived in all caps.

Anything a generator produces is a draft. Read it, rewrite it in your voice, and confirm every claim in it is true of your actual video before you publish.

FAQ

What is the YouTube description character limit?

5,000 characters, as stated in YouTube's Edit video settings and Tips for video descriptions help pages.

How many hashtags can I use on YouTube?

You can add hashtags freely, but if a video has more than 60 hashtags YouTube ignores all hashtags on that video. Three to five specific tags is a sensible working range.

How many hashtags appear above the video title?

Up to three. YouTube selects the ones it considers most engaging from the hashtags in your description.

Do timestamps have to start at 0:00?

For automatic chapters, yes — the list must begin at 0:00, run in ascending order and include at least three entries.

Does the description affect search rankings?

It is one signal among many. The first lines matter most because they are what viewers and search previews actually see. Keyword stuffing is against YouTube's guidance and does not help.
